Short Message Service (SMS/Text)

Filipinos are all too familiar with the SMS feature of GSM phones. They text when they should call. They text when they can’t call. They text all day and all night. They even text when they can just walk to talk. I should know this behavior… I’m one of the guilty.
Texting in the Philippines is so popular that incorrect spelling has become a way of lyf hir n d pilipins. Grammar is included in the deterioration of both the English and Filipino languages. The only problem is it’s too short at the 160 character limit. We use texting as a substitute for fax, email or calling, after all. Of course, modern phones can handle multi page text but that just boils down to the affordability when it comes billing time.
The person to blame for this 160 character limit is a German, Friedhelm Hillebrand. What else can you expect from the land of engineers. Read through on how this great guy came to think of the feature and the came about with the limit.
Have fun!
